Mobility behaviour in Switzerland

Online survey Smartphone study

Participation is possible only if you have received an invitation letter. Participation in the smartphone study is possible only after filling out the online survey.

Project description

Mobility is constantly changing. Transport planning therefore requires regular adjustments to cope with population growth, changing needs and technological progress.

FAQ

Questions and answers related to the study

What is the time frame of the study?

2018-2020

Who is conducting the study?

MOBIS is a joint project undertaken by the ETH Zurich, the University of Basel, and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences.

Who is financing the study?

MOBIS is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Innovation Promotion (Innosuisse) and the Federal Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC).

Who commissioned the study?

MOBIS is a study within the scope of the Swiss Competence Centres for Energy Research (SCCER Mobility) and Energy, Society, and Transition (CREST).

What are the goals of the study?

The study aims at conducting surveys related to mobility and analysing mobility behaviour with methods at the frontier of scientific research, in order to inform policy with respect to optimising transport planning in urban areas.

Questions and answers related to study participation

Who can take part in MOBIS?

Participation in MOBIS is by way of a written invitation to randomly selected inhabitants of Swiss urban agglomerations. The invitation is non-transferable and may not be shared with others. Participation in the smartphone study is based on additional inclusion criteria.

How can I participate in the survey?

Click on www.mobis.info (or type the link into your internet browser). To begin the survey, enter your eight-digit participant identification number.

In which languages can I fill out the survey?

The MOBIS survey is available in English, German and French.

How long is the survey?

The online survey takes about 10 minutes. In the separate smartphone study, there are two additional surveys.

Where can I find the participant identification number?

The participant identification number was sent to you in a personal letter. In case you cannot find it anymore, please contact us via email at: mobis@ethz.ch

Can I participate in the survey only, but not the smartphone study?

Sure.

Can I participate in the smartphone study, but not in the survey?

No. To participate in the smartphone study, you first have to fill out the survey. Thereafter you will be automatically forwarded to the registration for the smartphone study, if you fulfil the inclusion criteria.

What are the inclusion criteria for participating in the smartphone study?

To participate in the smartphone study, you need to fulfil the following requirements:

  1. Receipt of the written invitation (including the eight-digit participant identification number)
  2. 18-65 years old
  3. Regular use of a car (at least two days a week)
  4. Live in a metropolitan area in the German- or French-speaking part of Switzerland
  5. Use of a smartphone that can install the tracking app
  6. Be able to walk 200m without pain or any other discomfort
  7. You must not work as a professional driver
  8. Sign the consent form
What are the tasks when participating in the smartphone study?
  • Fill out the online survey and registration
  • Download and activate the app
  • Read weekly emails on study progress
  • Fill out a validation survey of your tracked routes
  • Fill out a somewhat longer final survey
What is the workload associated with participating in the smartphone study?
  • Online survey and registration: approx. 15 min.
  • Download and activate the app: approx. 5 min.
  • Read weekly emails on study progress: approx. 10 x 5 min.
  • Fill out a validation survey of your tracked routes: approx. 10 min.
  • Final survey: approx. 30 min.

In sum, approximately 2 hours.

How long is the smartphone study?

The smartphone study will take place over two months.

What is the participant identification number for?

The participant identification number breaks the link between data and study participants. The researchers directly involved in the study can link participants to the identification number, however, this is not possible for third parties. This pseudonymisation makes it possible for the study to link responses from the surveys with the data from the smartphone tracking, which would not be possible with complete anonymisation.

How do I use the app?

Once you have downloaded and installed the app, you need to enter your participant identification number. Thereafter you do not need to do anything else. The app will automatically track your mobility in the background.

What data are collected by the app?

The app collects your mobility behaviour based on GPS tracks. These mobility data are used to analyse transport. These analyses allow for the identification key mobility indicators (e.g. mode choice). Further, trip purposes are derived based on multi-day travel patterns, and spatial analyses are conducted. For technical details, see our data privacy policy.

What is the content of the emails that I will receive?

You will receive weekly summaries of your mobility, by transport mode. For more details about the email contents, see mobility indicators.

Will I get compensated for the online survey?

No. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any compensation for the short online survey.

Will I get compensated for participating in the smartphone study?

Yes. For your complete participation you will receive CHF 100. Complete participation implies tracking of mobility during the full two months of the study duration and filling out both surveys (validation survey and final survey). You will have to provide details for the transfer of the compensation in the final survey.

What are the data being collected for?
  • The data will be exclusively used for research purposes.
  • The data will be archived according to data protection requirements and made available for future research projects.
  • Results will be published in the aggregate, which guarantees anonymity.
Where can I download the app?
What is the name of the App?

«ETH-IVT Travel Diary»

Is the app also available for Windows?

No.

How do I activate the App?

Once you have downloaded and installed the app, you need to enter your participant identification number. Thereafter you do not need to do anything else. The app will automatically track your mobility in the background.
